Serious Wake-Up Call.
November 28, 2007So I’m sure by now most of you have heard how our environment isn’t in the best shape…then there’s all these simple things you can do to help…different ways of giving back…a lot of dangerous events are occuring that could lead up to something horrific…some even claim it’s nearing the end of humanity…well, I had my wake-up call this morning!
Every morning, I get up and head straight for the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face. Today, I went to turn on the sink, and something with our water pressure had been screwed up, and I had only a few drips of water to work with. I thought, “Did we use the whole supply? Did I break the sink?”…and then I began contemplating whether the nearby brushfires had anything to do with it…,”Were the firemen using up the water to fight the fires?” I thought. As the few drips barely moistened by toothbrush, I was hit by something… no, not literally, but by a completely terrible thought! People had always told me to conserve water, and I’d tried my best to take short showers, to turn off the faucet while brushing my teeth, to recycle, to buy eco-friendly lightbulbs…but today, it dawned on me that I would have no way to survive without my water…DUH! First, I’d have to drink all the bottled waters and use those until they ran out, then the soda, then the other juices and liquids…could humans survive without water? No! DUH! But are we doing that much to conserve water…eh, kinda, not really!
There was no way for me to shower, clean my dishes…anything! And, although it was only a little problem with the water pressure, I began thinking that if we keep wasting water and nonrenewable resources, we’re on our way to running out of stuff…quickly! You’d be surprised how much damage we’ve done in the past few years, decades, centuries.
Since I’m only 14, it’s my generation… all of my friends, basketball team, you guys…we have to do our part. And I’m not pushing you to become an environmentalist, or get carried away in trying to save the planet, but it’s so easy to do little things! For example, unplug your phone/camera/laptop chargers and tv/radios when not in use, turn off the lights when exiting a room, add “eco-friendly lightbulbs” to the shopping list, and your parents can help install them…even ask if they’d get you a Hybrid as your first car!
All I’m saying is, when people tell you that it’s up to YOU to help save the environment, they’re not kidding! WE all have a lot of work needing to be done…but by starting small, we can take the necessary steps to achieving a healthier community, state, country, and eventually, universe!

I FULLY agree!! Wow, I would’ve like… died without water. How did you end up brushing your teeth??
What I do it, turn off all the power on appliances and stuff after I use them… I’m not really good with the computer though cause it’s practically my social life.. haha no jk. But yeah. And we already use eco friendly bulbs so I think I’m all good!!

hi alyson i have learnt to deal with no water and the envoroment as people in other contrys dont have lots like my family in northen cyprus the have a big tank and its barley enough for them plus my uncles farm so ever since 1998 and i was 8 years old i have been doing the things you say but in london everything is not envoroment its money but we still care about the envoroment

It’s great that you’re such an evironmentalist. You’re doing all the right stuff to help the world. You can also turn down air conditioners and the heat down or up just a bit to conserve energy. Wash clothes with cold water, no hot water. Don’t use pesticides for your lawn. Try composting vegetable scraps and eliminate using styrofoam cups and plates. I know this will sound weird, but disposable pads (for your periods) are available. Think about all the pads and non-flushable tampons that are just sitting there at wastelands. Also, this is kinda odd, but if you ever go camping, it’s best to urinate on a rock….not on the soil it kills it. The sun will dry it. first of all, I totally agree with you. And since I live in New Delhi, India, I frequently experience water and power shortages, and heavy pollution.
If you could only see the cloud of pollution that lies over the city, you can never see the sky! 99% of the cars and buses here are total environment-killers, they dont have any filters or stuff like that and just release their toxics into the air.
I always turn of the water when I brush my teeth etc. and turn of the computer whenever I dont need it, but you can get pretty discouraged when you see so many people just continuing to destroy our world!

Great blog post!! I too enjoy helping keep our world clean. I pick up pop bottles along our road and any trash that I find too. I’t makes me feel good to see our road all nice and clean instead of being littered with Beer/Pop bottles and old Fast food bags that careless people throw out the window.

Ofcourse my mum was recycling every little thing that was available for recycling and me and my 2 younger sisters we helping and going to the recycling ever 2-4 days because our green recycling bag was practically over the top!
And then when I went to school in the science club we were learning about running out of coal and fossil fuels and it really got some sence into me to see this was a good idea!
Then when I got home I decided to spend at least 1hour on the computer then turn it off at the plug when I went on your website when you posted a blog about protecting the enviornment and the polar bears only ending up in zoos and elephants having to spray sand over them to cool down and the words you put that in shocked life into me and I nearly took a fliping panic attack thinking about none of those beautiful things!!!!!!!
And ever since I’ve been driving my whole family crazy to recycle, turn of switches, reduce the use of water, ect.
Everytime I see a light on not needed or a plug im staright at it…….

I reduced a regular 20 minute shower to a 8minute shower!

My poor sister who is 7 has autism and keeps helping me turn off the plugs and I accidently forgot to throw an oasis bottle in recycle and she was screaming and shouting “Noel, recycle that, recycle that, help the world” and I was like “awwwwwwwwwk”

You guys in the US are far too cosseted with luxury. Water is a valuable good and the world should start cutting down water usage where the problem is the greatest: in the US.

What im doing to help our envierment is im throwing cans and water bottles in the recycle bins somtimes when i see to much trash on the ground i pick it up and trow it in the trash can.

Some things I do are recycle, use those light bulbs that conserve energy, and that water thing reminded me of a week ago ish our city thought there was like dirt in the h20 or something cuz some construction worker or something dug into a water hole.. lol! so i know what it’s like to have to use bottled water for brushing teeth and stuff but it was only for like 2 daysish then they said it was ok to drink… we could shower it in though.
but yea we definitely couldn’t survive without water, and i’m 14 too! wellll i gotta go finish my homework ttyl

Well, I know that feeling; I’m taking an Environmental Science class this year and we talked about Water Resources & Pollution and how it is effecting our every day lives. Here is some more information if I might add:
Water is imperative to our survival. With limited supplies of water, it is important to track our usage of this resource and explore ways of conservation methods. On estimate, the average person will use 82.6 gallons of water per day, 5,782 gallons a week, and 30,149 gallons a year…this is not good people! :-\
I agree Scott. God is helping the world, but he shouldn’t have to do it all by himself. Andre, I’m happy to live in the U.S., and everyone should be. I’m bad about the length of my showers, but I don’t shower every night, it’s every other night.

Hey Alyson! This is my first time on this site. I agree with your post on our enviroment. I just learned at school that lots of our rainforests are being destroyed. That’s where most of our oxygen and water come from. My teacher gave us an assignment to write a letter to the president and take a stand. What you can do is go to therainforestsite.com and just click the button to help save the rainforest. You can also help with other things too that are on that site. You can also recycle newspapers and bottles. I don’t know what I would do without water.
You really got the message out there. Al Gore’s been doing that too, but there are still people that don’t listen.
I want to save some water. I use way too much sometimes.
If just a few people start helping to reserve the environment, then we are getting nowhere. We need a universal effort and someone to start a move – just like Al Gore did.
God created this world and I’m pretty sure he is disappointed the way humans messed it up.
So we need everyone to start doing something. If all say “I can’t save the environment by myself anyway, so why even try?” then you guys all know where this is going.
@Lyndsay: Yes, you should be happy living in the US, because no where else in the world do people have so many luxuries.

LOL i am writing this after 5 hours without any power. Our generator isn’t working so no lights, no pc, no tv, no hot water.
It was kind of funny to see how we are all so dependent on electricity. I turned on switches automatically like 10 times, before realizing that it woulnt work…
Such a coincidence, first your statement, Aly, and then 2 days later such a huge powercut.
i know what your talking about Aly. In ecuador, we had to take one minute showers to keep hot water for later. sometimes we had to handwash laundry. people(including kids) on the streets were fortunate to get an umbrella, or two pairs of clean clothes. Now in Florida, it’s still hot and the electricity bills are high cuz of air conditioning. here are a few tips: when no one is in the house, you can turn the air conditioner up higher to save electricity. when you take a shower, just basically scrub really fast with soap. and for saving paper, use the other side of a piece of paper you don’t need anymore. That’s what i’ve learned.

Dear Aylson, I am glad to see that you care about our planet, after all we only have this one, and when it’s gone it’s gone. I converted my home to solar and wind power 17 years ago and run bio diesel in my car. People can do this if they want, but most don’t want to be bothered. The technolegy has been out there for 50 years to make us almost completely energy independent of oil. Unfortunatly there is no money in that for the big companies and our government so they don’t care at all. It takes a groop efert to change our ways. If we dont start doing somthing you kids won’t have a planet to inherit or live on.

To be honest, I wish that I helped out with the environment more. At school, I used to be on the recycling team last year…but now I’m not allowed. During lunch though, a lot of people don’t recycle their cans and bottles, so me and my friends take the cans and such for them sometimes. The other thing isn’t big, but me and my friends have a creek near our houses. Whenever it rains it gets so dirty. Not only do the rocks move and stop the water flow, there’s a lot of litter. We clean that up occasionally.
So, I don’t do much but I wish I did. I do some stuff around my house though…

Where i live we are in a serious drought and have been for a few years and we have to really try and conserve how much water we use so i am more aware of water usage than i was a couple of years ago.

Wow! Those are all great ways to help the environment.
Some things I do as a teenager is unplug appliances when not in use, and use water faster. Just last week our family switched from incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent. The ones we bought use only 13 Watts compared to a regular light bulb of 60! It helps the environment and lowers are utility bill.
It’s great you’re making people aware of a continuing problem of our planet.

And antother thing! My school recycles, but many kids just pitch their stuff in the garbage bin. We get a lot of worksheets at our school, so I thought not walking witht he measley 1/2 pound weight of a couple papers 10 more feet if it could help save the earth was prettey ridiculous. I got my librarian’s permission to put up posters saying to recycle all around the school! Let’s both keep saving the earth!

To save water you can not brush your teeth as soon as you wake up becuz if you brush your teeth eat breakfast and brush again:P that sounds a little silly so wait till your done eating and then brush your teeth you can wash your face before if u want.if you use hairspray don’t use the aerosol hairspray use the pump sure it takes longer but aerosol is one of the reason’s for globe warning.here one really kool fact knd of did you no that talking is pollution(so don’t tie up the phone line lol)and at Christmas most people like my family leave the trees on all day and turn them off at night! i make sure my parents only put it on at night you don’t need all those lights on in day time.Solar power lights are really good and save’s you money so you don’t have to by more for next year

Well first off, im a vegetarian, for about 7 months now. On the water thing, i have bad habbits of keeping the water on while brushing my teeth, and doing dishes. But i do make my mom get that gas thats environment friendly when she has to refill the car. Im more of an animal helper, since theres less and less people worried about that, and how they feel.

To help the enviroment my school has a Green Club. Every Friday after school we take the recyling bins all around the school. Now, my school is the biggest catholic school in my town and we have like 507 kids in like 15 classrooms. the office has like 7 bins so we take them all and sort them and then bring then bring them to the big recyling bin across the street. Every friday poeple put the wrong stuff in the bin and then we have to jump in this big dumpster and take it out abd that is kinda of fun and really gross. And so we help our school and our world one bin at a time

i am actually in the student sevice club at my school and we have one idea that you might be interested in…once or wice a year we go to our local beach and clean up. ANything we see, well everything we see is pretty bad for our environment. One time we found a car tire. WEIRD! I right ther with u i didn’t lose my water but i know how it feels to not have any conserving and helping the enviorment is a big part of life every day we are using more gas and i think that its the goverment fult not the president but now i know why its because the higher the gallon they think we will want to stop speding our money one day cause its not like the pay checks are as high as the gas prices but still every day i am thankful for what i have and try to keep it so I believe what u are saying i hope it gets out to everyone cause its true but not everyone knows it but the world can stop spinning any day and we won’t have much time unless we help and try to save our planet.
Once in awhile the water is turned off because of a water main break during the winter or if the pipes are being replaced during the summer so I have some idea of going without water. I try to do what I can to help the environment by turning off unused lights, tv, computer, and limiting myself to 10 minutes in the shower. I know there’s more I can do but at the moment my family can’t really afford the environmentally light bulbs yet. Thankyou for your advice Alyson.

I was thinking the exact same thing. You see I live in New York city, the city that never sleeps. It’s amazing how much energy we use daily, as well as garbage we produce and the amount of carbon dioxide we emit. Over the last few months I’ve done all the little things, like setting the TV to save energy, and all the other things you mentioned. All these things that we can do to save energy, are also some things we can do to help postpone Global Warming. I’m fourteen, the next generation, and I’m sure as hell ready to take on a challenge.

I think what you are doing is great writing and telling all your fans about saving the earth. Well I live in Canada and our winters are freezing! A lot of people idle (leave it running to warm it up)their cars and sometimes they are not even in their cars! When people idle their cars when they are not even inside I feel like driving off in it to give them a wake up call! But what I dont get is that idling is first of all bad for the enviroment and if they dont care about the enviroment its bad for their car and it wastes their gaz!!!!! So I just wanted to tell you a great idea is to plant a bunch of trees because they give us oxygen! THANKS!

I totally agree with you. My fam in the Philippines dont have any water except from what they get from the Monsoon season, which only lasts 3 or 4 months. I think we should ALL help save water.
I’ve been thinking of becoming a vegetarian or a vegan. Of course I recycle and I don’t waste paper, meat or anything. A vegetarian is someone who is a herbivore but still eat things that are produced from the animal. A vegan is a vegetarian who omits all animal products from the diet like no eggs and cheese etc. I am trying not to use cars, buses, and trains. In fact if I want to get somewhere like school, YMCA, different activities, I run, jog, or walk unless it’s somewhere like Manhattan, LA, or China. I conserve water when I take showers or baths. I wet myself, put shampoo and soap on, then I jump unto the shower, rinse all the suds off, add conditioner, rinse and get out. The process is only about 10 minutes and you can save a lot of water. Plus: don’t wait until the water’s really hot cause you waste a lot of water that way. I am tryig to get my family to put o more clothes ad tur dow the heat in the winter. And in summer, I tell my family, instead of turning on air conditioners, use a fan or just bear the scorchingheat. Plus use all paper front and back. Instead of throwing books away, donate them or recycle them. My family thinks I’m going crazy now.
Plus:Don’t waste food even if it’s spinach, eggplants, beet,broccoli or any yucky type of food! And don’t watch too much tv or turn on any uneeded lights.

i had the same problem once. My water would not come out of the faucet like it’s supposed to so i was stuck using the little water i had. It was really fusturating. I’m now trying to work on my enviroment skills, like turning off lights when im not using them, starting to recycle more often.
But yeah, how did you get on with your morning routines with out the water?

Um well I turn off lights when I leave a room, I take 5 minute showers, I do have a problem with my computer though, I am allways Instant Messaging my friends.
How we can change:
I would say a good thing to help our inviorment is cut out some tv time.
I found out that for every hour of tv you watch you lose 15 seconds off your life (for every 4 hours of tv you lose a minute) That made me freak out!!!! I want to live just as long as the next person does, so now I only watch ” HANNAH MONTANA ( # 1 priority ) Icarly , and a few others like Suite life.
Make a change.

First of all, I’d like to say that you are a great role model. You haven’t let stardom take over your life, and that is awesome. Also, I’m your age, so we both definitely have a huge impact on our environment. (By the way, you are about 9 months older than me.)
I actually go to an environmental charter shool, called Prairie Crossing Charter School, or PCCS for short. It is a Kindergarden through 8th grade school, and I am in 8th grade. I have gone to this school since I was in Kindergarden, when I started learning about the environment at an early age.
We have done many things regarding the enviornment, and now I am working on a thing called a Culminating Project, which is a project we have to do, which must have something to do with helping the environment. My partner and I are teaching younger children in a poverty stricken area about caring for the environment, and growing organically.
Here are some things I do to help the enivornment at my house:
Turn off the lights when I leave the room
Turn off the faucet when I am done using it
Turn off my computer when I am not using it
Recycle
Reuse things
Here are some things we do at school to help the environment:
Recycle
Compost
Turn off the lights when we are not in the room
Learn about the environment
Do projects to help the environment
Also, my school is a green school, which means it is environmentally friendly. We use eco friendly lightbulbs, we have environmentally friendly heating, even energy conserving toilets!

You are totally amazing! First dancing, and now you have practically gotten hundreds of people hearing your message to help be environmentally friendly.
A few months ago, scientists came to my school and talked about the same thing you are, and suggested buying some cereal or any boxed stuff without the box (but in a bag or something) to save some trees. I hope this helps.
